Steven Segal Week

While sitting at home last night, channel surfing, I happened upon channel 56 - aka 'Peachtree TV' - formally know at 'The Superstation'. After watching a few minutes of a Seinfeld re-run, a commercial came on informing me that it is Steven Segal week on Peachtree TV.

Seriously.

Steven Segal week. In 2008.

I wonder if they have a hard time finding sponsors for those time slots? I can't believe the man is still making movies. Though a quick check of IMDB does show he has a number of recently completed movies as well as a few in production. All of which have awesome titles and character names:

Prince of Pistols (2008) (in production) .... John Prince
Killing Point (2008) (V) (post-production) .... Detective Jacob King
The Untitled Onion Movie (2008) (completed) .... Cock Puncher
Pistol Whipped (2008) (V) .... Matt
Urban Justice (2007) (V) .... Simon
Flight of Fury (2007) (V) .... John Sands
Attack Force (2006) (V) .... Cmdr. Marshall Lawson
Shadow Man (2006) (V) .... Jack Foster
Mercenary for Justice (2006) (V) .... John Seeger
Black Dawn (2005) (V) .... Jonathan Cold
Today You Die (2005) (V) .... Harlan Banks

Check out some of those character names. Commander Marshall Lawson! Though the best is for the Onion Movie - Cock Puncher! Hilarious. And that is likely the only movie with Steven Segal in it that i will see on purpose in the next.... ever.

Who knows though, maybe the guy will have some sort of renaissance like John Travolta did for a year or two after Pulp Fiction. Maybe.

A Mixtape For You

12 Months 10 Albums

According to my last.fm profile, these are the top 10 albums I listened to in 2007 - this list does not include iPod or "in car" listening.

1. Kings of Leon - Because of the Times
2. Wilco - Sky Blue Sky
3. The Who - Live at Leads
4. Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank
5. The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America
6. The Clash - London Calling
7. Black Francis - Bluefinger
8. The Hold Steady - Separation Sunday
9. The Clash - The Clash
10. Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros - Streetcore

Surprisingly, this list would be quite different than my "in car" list for 2007, which I would guestimate as this:

1. Wintersleep - Welcome to the Night Sky
2. Two Hours Traffic - Little Jabs
3. Wilco/My Morning Jacket/Ryan Adams/Jayhawks/Alt Country mix
4. Misc Mix cds/iPod playlists
5. Wilco - Sky Blue Sky
6. Wilco - Kicking Television
7. The Black Keys - The Big Come Up
8. The White Stripes - Icky Thump
9. Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Shake the Sheets
10. Led Zepplin - Mothership

From this blog post we can all learn 2 things:

a) I have great taste in music.
2) Last.fm is pretty darn cool.

I Wanna be a Rockstar

Rockband might be the most fun I've ever had playing a video game. This is our 'power rock trio' rehearsing for our world tour - which is as close as i'll ever come to being a rock star. We still need a name for our band - please leave suggestions in the comment section. That's me in the middle rocking out on the fake plastic Fender Strat. Tag I'm It

For the first time in my blogging 'career' I've been tagged in a 'meme'. Actually, it probably isn't the first time, but I think it might be the first one I will have actually responded to.

Instructions:

1. Pick up the nearest book ( of at least 123 pages).
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Tag five people.

Results:
Day 97. It's a Tuesday afternoon in December, but I feel like I've just experienced my first real Sabbath. Let me explain: The doorknobs in our apartment fall off on an alarmingly regular basis. They're mercurial little suckers.
That little tidbit is from AJ Jacobs book - The Year of Living Biblically, which I just finished reading. It's a good read - quite funny and a little inspiring in parts - definitely recommended.

Since Mark suggested I might add a little Canadian flair to this meme, I decided I should pick up the 'Canadian' book that is closest to me as well - here are the results of that:
Terry's love of hockey was nearly bottomless. Wayne Gretzky and Bobby Orr visited Terry at the Foxes' home, and Tiger Williams visited him while he was in Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. The hockey sticks on these pages were presented to Terry by Tiger Williams, Darryl Sittler, the Montreal Canadians and the Vancouver Canucks.
That comes from my favorite author [who also happens to be Canadian] Douglas Coupland, from his book Terry - which is written about the life of Terry Fox - one of the most inspiring Canadians ever. Interestingly enough, there were only 3 sentences on page 123, and they are the ones included above. The subject matter doesn't get much more Canadian than that!

Now comes the hard part, finding friendly bloggers who actually read my site, that might respond.

I'll tag my good friend Rodney at glasseyerod.com - even though I know he is much too busy with his brand new son to respond.

Next up will be Ben at occasionallywright.typepad.com. He just finished covering the big NHL All Star weekend in Atlanta, so he's probably looking for his next blogging challenge. Well here it is.

Third up is my buddy Aaron. He and his lovely family are in Kenya serving as missionaries, so I am sure he has all the time in the world to respond to my silly little blogging meme. That is if they have electricty this week.

I do believe those might be the only 3 people who actually read my blog that have their own blogs. Other than my co-workers - though if I tagged any of them, I would be mocked and ridiculed - which is still likely the case just for responding to this one.

Based on a True Story...

If I look hard enough, I might be able to base my new movie, "The Whammy Bar Kid" on a true story

The Whammy Bar Kid

I went to see Juno on the weekend - this post isn't going to be a review of the movie - other than it was a really great movie.  This has more to do with somewhat of a cultural phenomena that I noted during the movie previews. Of the 3 movie promos that were shown at the beginning of the movie, 2 were of the 'dance movie' variety:

How She Move

Step Up 2 the Streets

Both of these movies are of the "down on their luck attractive 20 somethings overcome major life obstacles by dancing their way though the hardship, thus finding love and happiness - and an awesome high paying career as a dance instructor and/or music/dance video producer."

Mind you, I haven't seen either of these movies - nor will I... Ever. I am a little confused as to how people actually get money to make movies like this - but with the success of TV shows like "Dancing With the Stars" and "So You Think You Can Dance", I guess it's not really that surprising - popular culture sells - even if it is crap that I don't like.

So all of this got me thinking, and I have decided to capitalize on another popular cultural phenom and write a movie based on the uber popular Guitar Hero franchise. My movie will be called "The Whammy Bar Kid", and here is the plot:

A down on his luck attractive 20 something [I'm presently in talks with Shia LeBeouf and/or Michael Cera to play the main character] overcomes major life obstacles by rising to the top of the underworld Guitar Hero circuit. As the popularity of the video game series rises, so does our underdogs social ranking - eventually taking him into the worlds spotlight - where he meets the love of his life [Scarlett Johansson or Natalie Portman] - as well as his fake guitar playing nemesis [Daniel Radcliffe - he is totally ready to play a bad guy]. Our 'Guitar Hero' aka 'The Whammy Bar Kid', battles through financial hardship and a repetitive strain injury to win the girl, and also gets a job designing video games and compiling movie soundtracks.

Things my movie has going for it:

1. Corporate sponsorship - product placement galore.
2. Young talent - todays hottest stars with todays hottest products.
3. Everyone loves Guitar Hero.
4. Best.Soundtrack.Ever.

I'm looking for potential partnerships for productions costs etc - any major movies studio heads reading this, please leave your name and a contact number in the comments.

So Say We All!

Officially an Old Man

I crossed some sort of "I'm becoming an old man" threshold this week.

I bought slippers.

I have never worn - nor had the need or desire to wear special 'indoor footwear' before - but this past week my feet were so cold, i had to do something. Wearing an extra pair of socks wasn't really an option - as my feet would no longer fit in my "outdoor" shoes. I usually just wear my sneakers in the office all day - but with the winter weather, it's too messy. So yesterday morning, when it got to the point where i could no longer feel my toes, i went on the hunt for slippers.

Where does one buy slippers? I wasn't sure if i should go to a shoe store or Walmart. So i asked myself a questions - "If I were an old man, where would i go to buy slippers?" My immediate reaction was Canadian Tire, but i wasn't sure if they would have what i needed. My second old man thought was Sears, which turned out to be a good choice as they are having a wicked slipper sale this week.

Instead of looking for some hip/high tech/super cool slippers, i went straight for the old school grandpa style - Arnold Palmer Plaid Closed Back Slippers. Yes, Arnold Palmer has a line of slippers named after him. They are actually quite comfy and are keeping my toes from falling off.

Next purchases on my list, a smoking jacket and brandy snifter... and maybe a monocle.

Dude..

Dude. It's such a great and descriptive word.
